Severe Mitral Valve Prolapse?

by helpmepleaseplease, Jan 12, 2009 09:51PM
I have an elevated ANA so I was sent to a rheumatologist to see what was going on. I have Raynaud's disease so he ordered an echocardiogram to see if maybe I had pulmonary hypertension. His office called with the results to say the echo was normal. I asked them to send it to me which they did. It says I have severe mitral valve prolapse. How can this be normal? I am sick with worry. I have to call them back tomorrow but what does this mean?

It could be that they did not see any pulmonary hypertension, which is good.  The severe mitral valve prolapse is concerning and you will have to talk to your doctors about it.  The main thing is to keep the pressure off your heart and lungs.  Make sure you are taking all your medications as prescribed by your doctor.  Eat healthy, vegetables and fruit and try to limit meat especially processed such as hotdogs.  Shortness of breath is a sign of a heart valve problem.  Are you experiencing severe shortness of breath that limit activity that you normally could do before?  If you find that you are unable to do things that you could do easily before due to shortness of breath, you need to see your doctor as soon as possible.  Take care.

Severe mitral valve prolapse would not produce a normal echocardiogram.  Valve prolapse indicates when the heart pumps the pressure billows the leaflets back into the upper chamber rather than pumped into circulation, and an echo would reveal mitral severe valve regurgitation.

It is possible there is an error in the report .  Mild MVP is medically insignificant.
