Sex after bypass sugrery

What are your guidelines with respect to this topic?  I am 56 years old, 4 weeks after surgery, working out in heart rehap (target pulse rate set for me is 105).

Dear David,



This is best worked out with your exercise physiologist.  right now your target heart rate is still quite low relative to what we would target for a normal (non-postop) person your age.  



I would go slowly. Sex will likely increase your heart rate well above 105 and does require a fair amount of cardiovascular energy.

We typically advise returning to sex once a patient can exercise 4 to 5 METS.



About 6 -7 minutes on a Bruce protocol treadmill.
