Sharp Pain - Left Armpit

Dear Doctor:
I am experiencing a sharp pain under my left armpit, that is coming and going. It has been extremely sharp when it started and now it is just lingering. It is not as extreme or sharp as it was from the onset.
I am a 45 year old woman, and I have never experienced this pain before. The first thing I thought of was my heart.
I am 5'8" and approximately 135 lbs, and in good health.
I am also in the middle of my menstrual cycle and I don't know if this is some how related.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
