Simultaneous Blood Pressure Meds

Should I be on both a beta blocker and a calcium channel blocker. My GP has me on both Beta Blocker ( Toprol 100mg) and Calcium Channel Blocker ( Amlodipine 5 mg). Recent web research point out that Calcium Channel blockers should be used IN LIEU of beta blocker and are NOT NORMALLY used together. Thoughts? I am a 55 yo male. Treated BP runs from 120-133. Thanks for any words. It will  help me in my discussions with my GP to steer proper treatment.

Norvasc (amlodipine) is not contraindicated with beta blockers but other calcium channel blockers such as Diltizem or verapamil have a relative contraindication.  It has to do with the mechanism of action of these meds.  Amlodipine affects a different calcium channel then the other two.
