Still nautious 3 months after open heart surgery

Still nautious 3 months after open heart surgery

My mother had a triple bypass June 23rd and was sick (vomiting) for a month until I figured out the Amiodorone medicine they had her on was making her sick. I asked the surgeon and he took her off the Amiodorone around July 20th, so she was on the medicine approximately 1 month.

I understand Amiodorone has a long life span and it can take up to 6 months for the body to eliminate it from it's system.

My mother vomits every 1 1/2 weeks on average. I can tell when she is starting to feel ill and she usually will start vomiting within a few days.

I hate to see her like this and am looking for a solution....or any kind of advice. Is there anything I can give her to counteract the Amiodorone? Is it normal for her to be sick so often 3 months later?

Please, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Adam

I'm not a doctor, but have a health background and do a lot of reading (medical hournals my husband, who is a doctor, receives.) But 6 months for a medication to stay in your system and not be completedly cleared seems awfully long.
I've also not heard of long-term vomiting from Amiodorone (maybe someone else on the form has.) What other medications is she taking right now?

What does her cardiologist or primary care physician say about this vomiting? I think she needs to have some tests to figure out what is causing this and what to do to remedy the problem. They may want her to see a gastroenterologist/digestive specialist for an evaluation.

Thanks Yvette - The only other new medication she is taking since heart surgery is Benicar. I'm going to ask her doctor to replace the Benicar with something else and see if her condition improves. No one from her primary care physician, surgeon or cardiologist seem very concerned with her vomiting so much.

Thanks again,

Adam

Did you ever figure out a way to help your mom?  My dad is one month out from his open heart surgery and still has nausea, vomiting and gagging.  Doctors can't seem to figure it out.  Poor guy hasn't had a meal in a month.  I would appreciate any advice.  Thanks, Loulou

I believe Benicar removes excess fluid to lower blood pressure, making you urinate more often. One common side effect of this medication is nausea. I think you are wise to seek an alternative.

Is your Father still on strong pain killers? I couldn't find my appetite or stop feeling nauseous until I stopped taking tramadol pain killers which was around 6 weeks after surgery. After six weeks I was able to control the discomfort with paracetamol and then I ate like a horse.
Nearly all forms of nausea after heart surgery are medication related, so it may be something else he is taking. I would mention it to your Doctor.

I replied to your note.  We had the same problem with doctors not being able to figure out what was causing my mother to get sick.

The Amiodirone was causing my mother to vomit almost every day. The stuff is pretty toxic to the body. After she stopped taking it she would only vomit every week or two.

We started trying different blood pressure medications and finally found Bystolic (high blood pressure beta blocker) works great for her. Your fathers nausea is probably due to medicine. Be sure to ask the doctor to try different medications.

Hope your father feels better soon. Please keep us updated.

Adam
