Stomach Pain

by Momcani, Aug 19, 2005 12:00AM
My mom had bypass surgery in Jan.  Since that time she has been having gas pain after every meal, some severe, and about 1 day a week, diarreha.  The medicines she is taking areLovastatin 40 mg, Atenolol 50 mg, Enalapril 10 mg, and Prandin 2 mg.
While we understand that a lot of meds can cause these types of symptoms, we are wondering if this is common after bypass with these meds, and for this long.  I say it can't be, but my mom is afraid to say anything to her drs as she is afraid that it will lead to more test, maybe another surgery.  She still is having incision pain, so on tolp of this, she a little depressed about the whole thing.

Thank You,

Momcani

Hello,

You are correct, diarrhea is not a very common complication from surgery and I can't think of a surgical complication that would cause diarrhea 6 months after surgery.  One of the most common side effects from Prandin is diarrhea.  If this was a new medication around the time of surgery, it may be the culprit.  Atenolol and enalapril do not cause diarrhea, it is rare with lovastatin.

I would go to your primary care doctor to discuss options.  My guess is that it is probably the prandid.

I hope this helps.
