Stopping lanoxin

Stopping lanoxin

I had a couple episodes of AFib late last year (heart rate went to 160), and I went on coumadin and lanoxin (.125mg once a day). January 21st I had a very successful mitral valve replacement at the Cleveland Clinic Florida. I am however still in AFib (no flutter just irregular), and still on couadin and lanoxin. My left atrium was 6.1 cm prior to the operation and my heart muscle was and is strong. My pulse rate stays between 42 and 56, except after a 2 mile jog when it reaches 100.
Is there any reason to continue with the lanoxin? I'd like to try tapering off it.
My family Doc said go ahead, its ony to slow the heart rate. My age is 68.

Dear Robert:
Based on the information you have provided, the lanoxin is probably not doing all that much for you right at this instant.  However, if you were to suddenly go into a more rapid rate of atrial fibrillation (as you had in the past), it may afford you some protection from going dangerously fast.  Therefore, I would not stop it without discussing the matter further with your own cardiologist.
Information provided here is of a general nature.  Specific diagnoses and treatments can only be made by your doctor.  If you would like to be seen at the Cleveland Clinic, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE for an appointment with a cardiologist at Desk F15.
