I have had bypass 1.5 years ago and never had a heart attack, and I'm 54. I just passed my cardio-lite stress test with flying colors. I do not take blood pressure medication(140/90). I'm now in very good shape aerobically but want to start lifting weights.

I was told that I need to be careful on the exertion level when pushing heavy weights.  Is this true, and are there any precautions I should be aware of?

I think light weight lifting is fine, but would avoid heavy weights, as this degree of exertion does not really benefit the heart. It is unlikely, however, that your sternum (the bone that was cut during heart surgery and wired together again) would cause any problems even if you did start lifting heavy weights, though rarely the sternum can separate even this late. Also, if your blood pressure is persistently elevated, adopting a low salt diet and possibly medication may be indicated.
