Stress EKG

by Stefan__0, Feb 07, 1999 12:00AM

I've recently had a stress EKG at my doctors request after having a resting
EKG. I have high cholesterol (280) and a bordeline BP 140/90 and leg
cramps/pains at night. I was perscribed provocal during the time between the intial
EKG and the stress test. During the stress EKG when I was close to and
at my target heart rate (198) the EKG monitor displayed a 'Fusion' for a
few seconds several times during the test. During the follow up we discussed
other topics and the EKG result where not mentioned except to say that there
was no problem with my heart.
I'm curious to what the 'fusion' message was indicating and if it is atypical
or just a misdiagnosis by the EKG monitor.
  Thank you,
  Stefan

Dear Stefan,
You really should ask your doctor about this at your next appointment since I can not
be entirely sure without seeing the report myself.
This word "fusion" when used regarding a finding on an ecg usually means a fusion beat, i.e.
a beat that originates from both the ventricle and the atrium (a normal heartbeat originates in the
atrium) and fuses in the middle so to speak.  An isolated event is nothing to worry about, so it is likely
that the stress ecg team noted it, but it did not alarm anyone of a problem.
It is great that your cholesterol is being treated as this is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease,
I hope that you are doing other heart healthy things like starting a daily exercise program, having your blood pressure
checked regularly (and treated if necessary), and quitting smoking if you do smoke.
I hope this information is useful. Information provided in the heart forum is for
general purposes only. Only your physician can provided specific diagnoses and therapies.
Feel free to write back with further questions. Good luck!
