Stress test for borderline hypertension

by dickwach, Dec 13, 2005 12:00AM
I am a 58 year old male with blood pressure averaging 125/85 and a family history of heart problems and diabetes. Cholesterol and triglyeride levels are under control on drugs. Is it appropriate to undergo a stress test to determine if borderline hypertension should be treated with drugs?

Hello,

Good question.  There is not a test to help with this.  In general, if you have a blood pressure between 120-139/80-89, this is considered borderline hypertension.  Most people are not treated for hypertension in this range, but it is not unreasonable if you want to do so.  I would probably base my recommendation on cardiovascular risk factors and your desire / hesitancy to do so.

I hope this helps and good luck.
