Strong heartbeats

I am concerned about my heartbeat, since last night ..I needed to work overtime to complete a contact proposal and went to bed around 1AM.  About an hour later, I woke up because by heart was beating very hard and it felt like it was going to jump out from inside me. I was terrified, shaking and got up to put cold water on my face..  I only remember shaking and terrfied to go back to sleep ..What could this be?  Could this be related to fatigue or should I just go see a cardiologist and not ask questions ...

I have had this strong heartbeat about 3 years.  I comes on for no reason, just sitting peacefully it can start. It is not pain, just very unconfortable and feeling like I will faint if it doesn't stop.  It is directly in the center of my chest and pounding heartbeat.  Usually within 10 seconds it goes away.  I feel a little week or minimally dizzy but that is all.  Last year I went to a cardioligist and had all the tests including the monitor for a month and he said it all looked good.  I continue to have these episodes and try to do my best witht them.  I thought maybe they were palpitations and are harmless but I don't know what else to do.
