I am a 22 year old male. I have a bicuspid aortic valve and an enlarged aortic root. My unmedicated blood pressure is normal. My bicuspid valve has "trivial" regurgitation, and some doctors miss the murmur. I have had surgery twice: once on a coarctation of my decending aorta, and once to taper the size of my aortic root down from 5.3 cm to about 4 cm. Two years after my surgury, it was found that my aortic root had grown to about 4.7 cm. Since that time (about 4 years ago), my root has remained at this same size (measurements between 4.7-4.9 cm). I have been a patient of Cleveland Clininc since my first surgery. My questions are as follows: Is it possible that i could go the rest of my life without a surgury? Is it possible that if I do need surgery, a valve-sparing procedure will be available to me? Is there any surgery one could recommend for my condition that would not mean anti-rejection and/or anti-coagulation medication? Also, should I have any offspring tested for congenital heart disease as a rule? I have been told my case is rare.
