Surgical reduction of heart size.

by Dean__0__0, Nov 28, 1998 12:00AM

I read about a procedure being perfomed in Brazil where a section of the enlarged heart is removed.  6 mos. to 2 years after procedure, normal heart function being reported.  Where can I learn more about this?  Is this procedure being performed in the U.S.?  Any assistance to my e-mail will be appreciated.
  Thanks,
  Dean

Dear Dean,
Thank you for your question.   The procedure you are referring to is called a Batista Procedure.  This surgery is for  persons with very severe heart failure.  The idea of the procedure is to change the shape of the failing heart from a baggy ball to a more correct cone shape.  It was being performed here but has somewhat fallen out of favor due to high complication rates.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies.  Please feel free to write back with additional questions.
