Dear Lee, thank you for your question. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is not associated with circulatory problems that could cause your ankle swelling (edema). Lower extremity edema can be caused by many different conditions and eating too much salt could be a contributor. My suspicion is that you have venous insufficiency which is caused by poor venous blood return from the legs. This condition can be treated by limiting salt intake, wearing compressive stockings on the legs, and by elevating the legs when sitting. I suggest that you see your primary care physician for further information about this problem.
