Swelling of Ankles

by Le__0__0, Sep 28, 1998 12:00AM

I' a 40 year woman.  I have a prolapse mitravalve.  Do you know if these can cause circulatory problems?
I get numbness and pain on my feet/soles, swelling on my ankles
every morning.  Have you heard of any condition concerning swelling and
how it relates with sodium in foods that we eat?  I suspect that the swelling has to do with my circulation
and when I eat too much sodium.  Is there any truth in my suspicion.
  Sincerely,
  Lee

Dear Lee, thank you for your question.  Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is not associated with circulatory problems that could cause your ankle swelling (edema).  Lower extremity edema can be caused by many different conditions and eating too much salt could be a contributor.  My suspicion is that you have venous insufficiency which is caused by poor venous blood return from the legs.  This condition can be treated by limiting salt intake, wearing compressive stockings on the legs, and by elevating the legs when sitting.  I suggest that you see your primary care physician for further information about this problem.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Specific diagnoses and therapies can only be provided by your physician.  Please feel free to write back with additional questions.
