Syncopy

by Mimmers, Nov 03, 2009 12:10PM
My name is Kim and a few years ago my best friend was diagnosed with syncopy (i think that's how it's spelled). Lately it's been getting worse. Her doctor has her taking daily vitamins and has her drinking gatorade almost all day every day. Her doctor said the electrolytes in the gatorade should keep away the fainting and dizziness spells. She's just been getting worse though. Nothing seems to help. Do you have any suggestions that might be better for her? She's 16, in really good health, the only thing is her doctors say she grew too fast and outgrew her veins... Any suggestions???

Not likely to be the case. She needs an evaluation with an echocardiogram, chest x-ray, and possible a tilt table test and definitely an EKG. This is how we usually begin the evaluation of a patient with syncope, then based on these results the patients are risk stratified and the ones at highest risk undergo invasive procedures and or [placement of permanent pacing or de-fibrillating devices.
