TEE results accurate?

by Scot__0__0, Aug 25, 1998 12:00AM

I am a 500 lb man who had a TEE while experiencing atrial fib. The cardiologist and tech said they were having trouble getting a clear image. Should I have another TEE done while not in atrial fib to recieve a more accurate reading or is the one during atrial fib adequate? How much distortion of the image could be due to my weight?

Dear Scott
Your weight would probably make it impossible to get clear pictures of your heart from a regular surface echo. A TEE should not be affected so much by your weight. If you were in rapid atrial fibrillation, it may have been difficult to get adequate images. Whether the study needs to be repeated depends on why the study was done in the first place.
I hope this is useful. Feel free to write back. I wish you the best of luck.
