TENS therapy for re-cur pericarditis

TENS therapy for re-cur pericarditis

Hello!

I have had recurrent pericarditis for 3 years.
2 of which I was on steroids (prednisone) but im off that now.
The condition is still managed with Indomethacin and valium (i get flares with work stress hence the valium)

Any how here is my question for you  :)

TENS machines, and their use for chronic heart related pain.....
As my pain is of a non heart MUSCLE nature (pericardial sack being outside the heart) would it be safe for me to give the treatment a go?

I wont be placing the elctrodes anteriorly and posteriorly (As its pretty obvious that this is stupid) but if i have the pads, say on my left breast (anteriorly placed) would it be a risk to my heart?

ps. my pericardial pain is not textbook stuff, hence this being a bit of a weird question. so I do apologise.
Ive seen world specialists regards it but im willing to give a TENS machine a go if it will help with pain management.

Ive read that the electrical pulses from TENS machines maximum depth is around 2 inches, so Im assuming this will not be deep enough to effect the heart muscle itself and cause rythym problems.

Any thoughts purely on would the TENS therapy be SAFE?

Many Thanks for your time  :)

Marc, Australia.

I was put on a TENS unit  back in my mid 30s for back pain. I injured my back in an severe accident. In addition, I had to go in for physical therapy and back therapy that included some deep muscle relaxation. I would consider it to be safe. Just in my case, not very beneficial.  Outcome.... I still  have that chrronic pain.  If there is any doubt in your mind, I  would certainly research this further.  Let your doctor know of any concerns and ask the doctors for more information. Take care and I hope you find some relief. Ally
