TONGUE

what might be the cause of waking up suddenly from sleep during night because of a choking sensation due to severe swelling of tongue (so much swelling that I was unable to fit in my dentures) .This was associated with extremely garbled speech.  I didn't call 911 because i couldn't speak. I checked in mirror and my smile was not  distorted.

I am a 63 yr. old female who is on medication for hypertension and have a strong family history for stroke and heart disease.

Depending on what medication you are on, it  can be a side effect of it, an angioedema or strong allergic reaction ... Go to Emergency!!!

Totally agree with Jrbon, but would just like to add it could be associated with the thyroid gland in the neck, or medication for Hyperthyroidism.
