Tapering Atenolol

My 83 uear old Mother has been taking atenolol 50 Mg in daytime and 25 Mg ( fifty pill cut in half at bedtime). She is having fatigue, psorasis, dry mouth. My question is can you cut atenolol in half. Their website says not to but her doctor says it OK. Her doctor said to taper down the dose. How do I do that when the pill is not suppose to be cut?
