Tests to detect heart disease

what is the best non invasive test/scan whatever to detect if your heart is working as it should. if there is famlial history of heart attacks what should one do as preventative measure.

The best noninvasive test would be a stress echocardiogram with full resting echocardiogram.  This only takes about an hour and involves you walking on a treadmill or using medications to chemically stress your heart if you can't.  They are not cheap, but most insurances will cover if any symptoms of heart disease such as chest pain or shortness of breath.

If you have a history of heart attacks in your family and anyone under the age of 50 has had one it means that you are simply in a higher risk group. The best thing that you can do for yourself if this is the case is to make sure that you are checked annually by a good heart doc so that they can keep an eye on you. As far as preventive measures go diet is the thing to watch out for and your fat intake of food groups that could potentially build up the placque in your arteries that lead into your heart thus causing a heart attack the number one way that this occurs.  There is so much written about what we all need to do in terms of exercise, dietary habits...there is no shortage of info out there for any of us....

The best prevention is a heart healthy diet, exercise and have your cholesterol checked regualry.  There are many tests available to check before moving on to the heart caths. But above all, start before you show any symptoms.  If I knew 30 years ago what I know now about caring for my heart I would never have had any of the heart attacks or any of the stents I have now.  Take on a healty attitude also.
