I am a firefighter and in our department if you have a history of two or more of the following, high blood pressure, smoking, family history of heart problems, high cholesterol, over weight you are required to undergo a thallium stress test every year. Is it necessary to have this test every year.

Dear Joseph,
The American College of Cardiology classifies indication for stress testing by 3 catergories: I - clearly indicated; II - controversy exists as to the need III - not indicated.  Stress testing for asymptomatic (no chest pain) individuals in high risk jobs (e.g. airline pilots, firefighters)is a class II indication.
