Hello my name is Linda Hott and i was wondering if you could answer some questions for my daughter she is  a High School Student and she has to doa  report on a field of her intrest and she would like to be a Cardiologist. She was wondering if htere is anyway you could help her with this ?

Could you please answer the following.......

1>  What is the normal pay for this field?

2>  Is there any strain on your family ?

3>  What are your normal hours ?

4>  What kind of education and training do you have to attend ?


And also i would like to know if there is any way she could doa  career shadow for this field her teacher wants them to do one ut i dont know if she can in this field well thank you for your time and conecideration

Dear Linda,

In response to your quesitons.


1> What is the normal pay for this field?

That depends a general cardiolgist will start with a salary of 100-125,000 and a specialist in intervention may make as much as 500,00 depending on  patient volume and expertise.

     2> Is there any strain on your family ?  Yes , this is due to long working hours and emergency calls.

     3> What are your normal hours ?  Hard to say.  In general 7 AM to 7 PM not counting weekends ( usually 4-5 hours per day) call and emergencies and unpredicted hours.

     4> What kind of education and training do you have to attend ?  4 years college,
   4 years medical school
   3 years internal medicine training and 3-5 years of cardiology training.

This is a very long course for training and costly.  Typicall cardiologists coming o9ut of training may accumulate as much as 250,000 in debt due to the expense of medical college and college.

In general, during training a resident or fellow will make about 25-35,000/year.
