Ticking or clicking noise in my throat area

I am trying to research information on a ticking or sort of clicking noise that hear when I lay down or push the air out of my lungs.   The noise is in my throat, it sounds almost like slight popping in my windpipes or upper throat area.  I used to get terrible bronchitis and smoked about 20 years ago,and have been fortunate that I haven't had any upper respiratory infection or sickness in many years, but lately this ticking noise is becoming more frequent--like small pops of air or skin are making noise when I breathe.  Any suggestions on where to look or what type of doctor I should contact for an examine?  Thank you!
