Timeliness of skipped heartbeats

by conciliary, Jun 16, 2007 12:00AM
I have had skipped heartbeats for the past 4 years.  I have had an EKG, Echocardiogram, Stress Test, and recently worn a Holter Monitor. I have been told that the skipped beats are benign and harmless.  The only test I have actual had these skipped beats was while wearing the Holter Monitor, but they were mild and infrequent (of course), but they did occur.  I frequently have some rather violent episodes of them.  Not always, but they are typical.

If all of these tests have shown no underlying condition and that the skipped beats are benign, would the result be different if the tests caught the skipped beats at a time when they were very frequent?  For example, during the treadmill stress test, I had no skipped beats at all.  That was about a year ago.  I got on the treadmill yesterday, and 2 minutes in, my heart was jumping all over the place and I had to quit because it got a little freaky. This lasted during the entire time I was on the treadmill and for about 10 minutes afterwards.  They had been ocurring frequently throughout the day as wel. My skipped heartbeats are no better or no worse today compared to a year ago when I had the stress test.  The stress test just happened to be on one of those days when I wasnt experiencing the skipped beats.

Thank you

Concillary,

Thnaks for the post.

There is no specific difference in the prognosis because you didn't have your palpitations while being evaluated. the only thing I would make sure is that you know what your symptoms are from with some type of ambulatory monitoring.

good luck

i have been having problems with palpitations for years but in the past 2 when i reached menopause, it got really bad.
I went to the doctor and had every test possible, echo-ekg- stress & doppler, all types of blood tests and everything was normal, except for mitral valve prolapse..but the palpitations are constantly...especially at nite when im laying down. Im on toprol25mg 2x a day, but it still dont stop them. I went to another cadiologist, they took the same tests,  they said i have a leaky tricuspid valve, take toprol. I asked what do i do with the palpitations..they are constant, they all said to try to ignor them....how can you ignor them when they are jumpping here and there constanly.
the toprol make you tired, and from time to time i feel shaky, jittery, and it really scares you. I went through alot of problems in the past 6 months, losing a mom, my job, and just every day life, but shouldnt there been some kind of cure. i dont want these to get so bad that my heart gets tired and stops.
another doctor tells me have a glass of wine and relax, i tried it  it was great, but 5 hs later my heart beats faster and i end up getting more nervouse trying to slow it down.
any suggestions..im really out of it  with this
