Your symptoms are very similar to mine. I woke up one night as if I'd had a nightmare and my heart sped up out of control. Had a myriad of tests and wore a Holter for a month. I was finally diagnosed with IST. The reason you get the speeding heart rate is because something in your dream/sleep caused an adrenaline release. This small release of adrenaline in s/o who doesn't have IST does not inc HR. However, in people with IST the response to adrenaline is exaggerated so we have this huge spike in rate and it wakes us up. My symptoms are only at night. There's also a postural involvement so being flat adds to it. Hope this helps.

hydration is a big factor in the unexplained heartbeats. if you have had all the tests and ekgs and they all come back ok. check your legs. do you have a few vericose veins? mmost people think they are staying hydrated when infact unless you are drinking pure water you are not. sodas, coffees, and even some juices actually have a dehydrating effect. if you have gone out drinking for the night, make sure you drink plenty of and nothing but water the next day. the reason i said check your legs for vericose veins, is because there is a disease that some of us are just born with. it is called vaso vagal syncope. it partially deals with anxiety, but it is caused by the valves in your veins staying open to allow your blood to flow 2 ways and backtrack instead of flowing the normal one way through your body. it causes the blood to pool in your legs and start to leave your brain causing a lightheaded ness, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and nausea, and eventually if you dont lay down and get your head lowwer than your heart you can pass out. i know because i do have this disease myself. have your doctor (Cardiologist) set you up for what they call a tilt table test. if it is positive then you have a disconnection between the electrical current of your heart and the muscles its self. its not dangerous so dont worry. the tilt table test is the only thing that proved what i have. stress tests and ekgs came back normal. i hope this was able to help someone out there
