Total Cholesterol/HDL Ratio

The lab that does my lipid profile estimates CHD risk based on my Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio.  The lab that does my daughters lipid profile, bases CHD risk on her LDL/HDL ratio.  What are the differences, advantages, and the significance of these two different ratios.  Why isn't this particular ratio standardized?

The answer largely depends on who you ask. Personally I just use the actual level of LDL and HDL to make any treatment recommendations. I do not use the ratios to determine therapy in an individual, other than for research purposes.
