Two way blood flow through valve?

by orangeblossum, May 25, 2006 12:00AM
I just had a echo done a week ago. It showed blood flowing both in and out of the valve, in what appeared to be almost equal amounts. My doctor says that this is normal and okay.
In Febraury I was taken to the emergency room with chest pains.
All the EKG showed was palpitations. The CAT scan showed no problems, Stress test no problems.
However this is what is going on;
chest pain or tightness
palpitations
dizziness (mild)
always cold hands and feet
facial flushes
sleeplessness
exhaustion
migraine headaches
difficultity in breathing occasionally after exertion
can't lay on left side or things get worse.

The doctor did put me on a beta blocker 25mg in the morning and 25 at night.
My question is in light of all the above, is it normal for blood to flow through the valve in both directions? Do I need to see another doctor?

blossom,

Im not sure what the findings were in the echo from your description. A valve in the heart is typically a one way valve where blood flows into a chamber or out of a chamber when the valve is open and backflow is orevented when the valve is closed. It is not abnormal to have a small amount of leakage from the valves and this is common in the general population.

I would have to know the specifics of your echo to comment more. ask you physician the specifics of our study.

good luck

I do the same same things I have Valve diease, It's called Bicuspid Av+AI. I get so weak I can't hardly move and My feet and legs swell so bad I can't walk. My hands get fat to the point I can't wear my rings. I can't say much to help you because I'm so lost myself. I just want to tell you I'm thinking of your pain and I know how you feel. Hope everthing works out for you. Elizabeth:)

Sorry you are having so much difficulties and unanswered questions. I am 62 years old and have spent the last10 years going to ERs and cardiologists.  Finally I recently visited an large excellent well known cardio hospital and have gotten some answers. It is amazing how many ER doctors in the many smaller hospitals don't listen, wrongly give advice   in cardio problems, and generally mislead patients with bad advice. I have heard too often, "there is nothing wrong with your heart" based on EKGs, enzymes tests, etc. when these tests are basica lly limited. Be careful to stick to non-evasive tests, however, because sometimes tests themsleves can create new problems.    I have been  incorrectly told many times that my problems are probably anxiety related. I think that is an uncaring doctor's easy way out.I have had several silent heart attacks over these years. I am sorry now that  I didn't drop all those doctors that made me feel like I was crazy.
This Forum has been so helpful to me. Google and Ask have a weath of imformation too.Good luck!
