Valve Damage

by Gail, Nov 23, 1999 12:00AM
Was wondering if there is any correlation between periodontal surgery, or other dental work and damage to the heart valves?  Have been diagnosed just recently with MVP and moderate to severe mitral regurgitation.  I have in the past 3 years, had numerous perio surgeries for gum recession and other dental work done.  I am now told I must take an antibiotic before any dental work is now.  Is this sort of after the fact?

Dental work can cause infections of heart valves that can lead to regurgitation. This is more common in people with structurally abnormal heart valves such as MVP. There was no way of knowing or preventing this ahead of time.
