Valve replacement and valve repair (MVP)

by Melissa, Sep 17, 1999 12:00AM
I've read that valve replacement only lasts a few years and that one can only have the valve replaced a maximum of three times.  Would you elaborate for me?  Also, is the same true for valve REPAIR?  How does valve repair differ from replacement?

Dear Melissa,

A valve replacement may last upwards of 15 years.  It would be highly unlikely that anyone would need more than three valves replaced.  Although if required this may be feasible.

There is less experience with repairs although it is anticipated that hese may have a more lasting durable effect.  A repair uses your own valve and simply a repair, suturing, cutting of the valve is performed to make it function better.
