Valves

by Street, Jul 17, 2001 12:00AM
I'm a 32 year old male with no history of major health problems. I do have a histroy of high cholesterol and just went to the doctor for a checkup. After an echo was done nothing serious was found. According to my doctor i do have trace regurgitation in 3 of my valves. What does this mean? I assume that a normal echo would show no regurgitation at all. Could this be an early sign of valve problems? Or is this a universal finding? Why would there be regurge? Does this mean that the valves are not functioning 100%?

Thanks

Dear Roger,
Regurgitation a means a backwards flow or leak across a valve.   Regurgitation is usually ranked in order of severity as: trace, trivial, mild, moderate and severe.  Trace regurgitation is so common that it is basically a normal finding.  There is no increased risk of developing valvular problems down the road.
