Very slow heart rate

Very slow heart rate

I am on 75 mg of Lopresor a day.  My normal resting heart rate had been in the low 50's before the beta blocker.  Now, with the beta blocker, it is reading 41 at rest.  I don't know the number at night while sleeping.  At what number is the rate considered too low?  I am a 60-year-old female being treated with beta blockers to block the effects of a hyperthyroid on the heart (it was causing atrial fib) until the hyperthyroid can be brought under control with Tapazole.  When the rate is in the low 40's, I don't feel that well.  I walk 30 minutes every day that I can (weather permitting), I am 5'5" tall and weight 147 pounds. I wondered if I am putting myself in danger with that slow of a heart rate.  Thank you for your input.

Sandy,

You might want to let your doc know about this sooner than later.  Your heart rate is pretty low.  60-100 is considered normal for "normal" people.

Below 60 is considered bradycardia--which can be ok given a doctor's review.  I'm on alot of cardiac meds, and mine is dipping into the upper 40s resting...I am concerned as well how low it is going at night.  I'm getting some fluttering too.

If you don't feel good, don't hesitate to get things checked out.

I'm 27 and my cardiologist loves my resting heart rate of 50-55bpm. My 20 yr old sister who is perfectly healthy has the same resting heart rate too.

Basically, if the low heart rate is causing you symptoms, it's too low for you.  I would recommend talking to your doctor about maybe decreasing the dose of the beta blocker since it's dropping your heart rate to the point where you're not feeling well.
