Weight loss and heart repair

by sampants, Jul 28, 2004 12:00AM
I am 35 years old, a non-smoker, and am currently quite overweight.  I am doing Weight Watchers and am having great success.

I worry that years of being overweight has taken some toll on my heart, though I have had tests done that have come back "normal."

My question:

Is it possible to repair any damage done to your heart from obesity if you lose weight and exercise.  I guess I am asking if the damage is irreversible.

I know an enlarged heart can be a side effect of obesity.  Is that something that can be reversed?

sam,

thanks for the post.

dont give yourself too many disadvantages unless you know they are true. most overweight people's cardiac function is fine, and the fatigue and shortness of breath that accompanies activity is usually due to deconditioning.

that said, some people do have cardiac dysfucntion associated with obesity. this can sometimes reverse when weight is lost.  I would not assume this is the case for you unless you have documentation of poor cardiac function.

good luck
