What does Mild Myxomatous mitral valve disease mean?

by Justin1967, Sep 19, 2009 01:48PM
I have mild myxomatous mitral valve disease with mild posterior leaflet prolapse and mild mitral regurgitation.
Mild TR with otherwise unremarkable right heart. I'm 42 years old and I think in reasonable health, will this effect my future health?

It may.  Myxomatous valve disease or "flappy valves" may lead to valvular regurgitation which can cause exertional shortness of breath, various heart arrhythmias and even heart failure.  Not all patients with mild disease progress to severe disease.  To be certain that there is no progression you will need doctor visits on an annual basis and echocardiograms ever 2-3 years.
