What is considered Normal Symptoms Post Op

by wildnmd, Jun 24, 2009 12:46PM
My husband just had by pass surgery last Wednesday home from the hospital Sunday and the last two days he has had this severe pain on the right side under his rib cage which wraps around to his side and back.  I called the doctor and they told him to take tramadol 50 mg at bed instead of the 5 mg oxycodone.  Two hours into his sleep he woke in extreme pain and asked me to help him up from the bed. He spent the night sleeing off and on sitting up.  The pain occurs when he lies flat and after he eats.  Is this normal?

This is muscular pain probably related to the chest tubes that were placed post op.  This is a normal occurrence and should get better over time.  Tramadol should help.  If it does not go away in the next 7 days or suddenly worsens and keeps getting worse, I would urge you to recontact your physician.
