What is wrong? Heart or something else? Please help

My fiance has had recurring chest pain for the past year or two. He is 26, active, has really good blood pressure, not overweight. Nothing seems to trigger the attacks, he can be walking, or laying in bed reading when it happens. It is always the left side of his chest and when I first met him in June 2008 they would come about 2 times a month or so. Yesterday he had two back to back and one earlier in the day. The pain is getting worse. He says it feels like someone is stabbing him in the rib cage or something. I am so worried but he doesn't want to go to the doctor. He gets short of breath because it hurts so bad and he can't move much because of the pain while the attack is happening. He does smoke but is active and healthy. He is under quite a bit more stress now, could that be causing it?

Seems like the only correct decision you should make is to have your fiance see the doctor. His symptoms appear very worrisome and I wouldn't delay getting evaluated any longer.
