When to use aspirin?

Dear Dr.,
I'm alittle confused about aspirin and when one should start taking it.  One doctor told me I should take one baby aspirin daily to control my hypertension along with my other bp meds.  Now I have another doc I'm seeing who doesn't agree with that.  She doesn't feel I need aspirin at all.  She told me that I only need an aspirin if I experience any heart attack symptoms.  I am trying to educate myself better on heart disease in women.  Thank you for any advice you can give me on aspirin.

Dear Toni,

I recommend a baby dose of aspirin ( 81 mg) in all women greater than 40 assuming that they don't have severe ulcer disease.
It has been shown in the Nurse's Health Study that this provides protection against stroke and MI.
