White coat syndrome

White coat syndrome

I am a 69 year old female with a historyof white coat. My Dr. put me on 5 mgs of lisinoprisaying that would help white coatl
, it sure is not. My normal readings at home are <120/60, once in awhile  below 140<70..  I take my monitor along to the Dr. to make sure it is accurate and she can see my past readings, but it is like she does not believe me.

I was just at  my Dr.s and when the nurse took my b/p it was 201/77, the Dr. took it two more time it was 190 and than 170/70. She wanted me to take 25 mgs. of metropolo at night. We went grocery shopping after leaving the Drs. came home put  the groceries away, sat down took my b/p, no resting time it was 118/since 58. i retook it at night it was 102/55 so I did not take the metropolo. I have bradycardia and don't think I need a med to slow my pulse rate down futher.

I get a echo done every few years that is normal, have heart murmur since birth and I have Fibromyalgia.I have taken my b/p when I was stressed out and it is never near what it is in the Drs,. office.

I know with anxiety I am going to get readings that are this high again when I see my Dr. she gave me the lecture on strokes and heart attacks, which we are all aware of.any input you can give me would be helpful.

Thank you.

Hey there,

I would recommend having your doctor order 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.  What this means is that you will have a machine constantly measuring your blood pressure intermittently for 24 hours.  This will prove to your doctor and yourself that it is indeed white coat hypertension. If your mean blood pressure is consistently less than 140/90 and more ideally 130/80 then you truly do have white coat hypertension and your physician should not be worried.  It will also allow us to see what your blood pressure is when you are sleeping and it should be < 120/70.  This would provide very helpful information to everyone.

Hope this helps!
