Why does my BP shoot up all of a sudden.

by nmum, Dec 06, 1999 12:00AM
I am hypertensive and am on toprol, which works for both my PVCs and hypertension. Once every few days, my BP shoots up to 160/110 etc. for apparently no reason. Not even diuretics is able to bring it down quickly. This goes on for a couple of days, I have dizziness and am not able to raise or lower my head, and then it goes down. What can I do for this and what is the reason for this. Should I go on a second medication continuously to avoid this, or can I just take this extra medication when such episodes happen.

Thanks for your help.

I am not sure what causes your surges in blood pressure. Some degree of fluctuation in blood pressure is not unusual. It usually means that you need more or additional blood pressure medications. However, you should not just take extra doses of medication on your own. Instead, you should discuss the matter with your doctor. This is especially true since the dizziness is a concerning associated finding.

why is dizziness a concerning associated finding??  I'me dizzy all the time with hypertension (control with atenolol) but nobody has been concerned.

Dizziness can be caused by blood pressure that is very high or blood pressure that is too low from medications. However, its significance is not something I can determine over the internet. Your doctor is in the best position to see if dizziness is related to blood pressure, something else, or not important at all.
