Young and scared, getting checked for HBP

by Amanda__0__0, Sep 23, 1998 12:00AM

Hi!  My name is Amanda, and I have many relatives with HBP.  My Sophomore
year in High School I was being tested for HBP because of occasions of
going to the doctor and having HBP.  I did not follow through with the
testing though because I became scared.  I am now a Junior in College, with
a history of depression and being on Zoloft and Depakote.  I have always
had a fear of seeing doctors because I don't want to know what is wronge,
but I went last week, and the doctor wants to monitor my BP.  I was just
wondering right now if there would be other tests to follow if they
find a problem with my BP.  Thanks.

Dear  Amanda
Thank you for your question.  First let me commend you on your willingness to take an active role in your health.  Due to your family history you are at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure.  This however should not cause you to fear.  There is no guarantee that you will develop HBP and it is entirely possible that you will be healthy all your life even if you do and it is treated properly.  This is the real goal is to monitor and treat as needed.  At this point all you probably need is occasional (every year to 6 months) BP checks.  Hope this helps.
