advice about hypertension

Hi,First of all i'd like to thank you for your time .I first posted here October 2004 it was regarding hypertension.Brief recap:I'm an 19 year old female,135lbs,5ft 5",non-smoker,no family history of hypertension or heart disease.May 2004 at a doctors appointment my BP was elevated further BP checks afterwards were all elevated all around 150-160/95-100,I was referred to a cardiologist, I had various tests between Sep 04 and Nov 04:blood tests,ECG,echo, kidney ultrosound, chest x-ray, 24 hour urine, all came back normal I was given a 24hour BP monitor to check for white-coat the results came back high.December 2004 I was put on 50mg of losartan.BP checks afterwards were still elevated I had endocrine blood tests in Jan 2005,got the results in Apr 2005 which came back elevated i'm not sure what was checked I think it may have been renin and aldosterone.I was asked to come off the losartan as that may have caused the results to be elevated, the tests were repeated in May 2005 and I went back on the losartan, I am still waiting on the results.
For the past 4 months now I have been having these 'spells' ,I could be doing normal everyday things like  watching tv or be at college when I start feeling  nausiated and get a headache I also get this pain in my chest more to the left side ,this tends to last anything from 1 hour to 3 or 4 hours. This comes in no particular pattern,it came happen twice a week or three times ,sometimes it may not happen for one or two weeks.I have not mentioned this to my doctor as i'm currently in the process of being accepted for a medical course in University and I have to pass a physical before I can be accepted .At the physical July 2005 my BP was 150/110 at the start and end of the exam so they have therefore asked for my GP to write to them telling them all details of my hypertension. If my GP knows about these 'spells' then there is a good chance of me not being acceepted.
What I would like to know is , is this anything i should be worried about or is it something that may just go away once I get my Blood pressure under control?
Any other comments or advice you would like to give me will be very much appreciated.
I understand that I should be explaining this to my own doctor but I will find out in a few weeks about University so if this is something you think I should mention,I will.
Thankyou.

xkcx,

thanks for the post.

No matter what you are trying for you should pay attention to your health first. Hypertension in someone as young as you is often due to an external and often reversible cause unless there is a strong family history.

WHile a blood pressure of 150/110 probably will not hurt you in the short term, long standing unclontrolled hypertension can cause a lot of serios problems so you should focus on trying to get to the root of it ASAP.

While you dont give the details of your 'spells', in a young person with 'spells' and hypertension a pheochromocytoma comes to mind.  You should discuss your history fully with your physician.

good luck
