I had about 15 electrocardioversions between 2000 and 2010. I never really noticed any side effects other than it would be a little red on my chest where they shocked me. About 2010, I was having to get shocked back into rhythm about every 3-4 months even when taking medication. I had a heart ablation in 2010 and it stopped the afib. I do have a few skipped beats now (pvcs) that a take some medication for. The ablation fixed my afib. so...now no more electrocardioversions.. hope this helps Claytex
Hi, electroconversion for defibrillation will reverse the rhythm to sinus. But this needs to sustained with medications like disopyramide, otherwise the rhythm is likely to revert back to atrial fibrillation. Also, the basic cause for atrial fibrillation needs to be treated, for maintaining normal sinus rhythm. Please discuss the pros and cons with your treating doctor before you consent for electroconversion. Regards.
