am i experiencing heart attack warning signs?

by susan-waren, Feb 20, 1999 12:00AM

hello, i am a 44 year female. last month i had the pounding heart and skipped beat lasting off and on for about 24 hours.  prior to this happening i had been drinking coffee about 4 cups for the day.  the pounding went away.. 2 days afterwards i started having a pain in my upper right chest up around the clavicle area.  i work out a lot and thought it might be a muscle pull.  eventually this pain went away.. it recurred during my daughters water polo game today,, and now i feel uncomfortable on the right side and maybe i am imagining on the upper left side near the arm pit.... 2 years ago i had the pounding anxious heart beat and went to the hospital and had an ekg... everything came out fine.. that episode was a result of a death in my family.. i have no family history of diabetes, heart disease.  i have never smoked, and my blood pressure is normal.. over the last 1 1/2 years i have lost 45 pounds , i walk every day for 45 minutes to 1 hour at a 15 minute per mile pace.  frequently i walk up hills and get my heart rate up to 160 bpm. i work out with weights 3 times a week.  with the weight loss i have continued to maintain by eating what i consider a healty diet.  next week i am going to the local hospital to have and ekg, stress test and all my blood levels tested.  i feel i am leading a model lifestyle to prevent heart disease... what is the problem and why am i experiencing these signs. i do own and run my own business for the past 16 years.. i do work only a 40 hour week.. sometimes it can be very stressful.. could these things happening be stress related and can that lead to heart problems.
  thank you very much,

Dear Susan,
Congratulations on your valiant effort to live "heart healthy".
This is an informational forum, not a diagnostic one.  What you absolutely
require at this point is a full history and physical exam plus a cholesterol
check and a holter/ecg.  A stress test may be indicated, this is the decision of
the physician who evaluates you.
I hope this information is useful. Information provided in the heart forum is for
general purposes only. Only your physician can provided specific diagnoses and therapies.
Feel free to write back with questions regarding any specific diagnosis you are
given after your full evaluation. Good luck!
