anesthesia induced tachycardia?

This may not necessarily apply to the heart per se, but I wasnt sure where else to post it.  Just looking for some commentary...A few years ago, I had surgery( laparotomy) which was uneventful, upon awakening from the anesthesia, I found myself in sinus tachycardia(110bpm) for approximatey 7 hrs. The PACU staff wasnt overly concerned, the sinus tach broke about 9 hrs post op. A few months later, I had a second procedure, when I woke up, again the sinus tach, this time my heart was running between 120-140bpm. EKG showed nothing unusual. The heart rate continued for almost 10 hours and I  wasnt released from the pacu for about 8 of it. In a few weeks, I will again have surgery. I am MORE than concerned about the possibility of tachycardia again, and how I will respond to it..Obviously a consult with the anesthesiologist is in order, but has anybody had a similiar experience?

I know these posts are old but I wanted to add a few comments. I too have had tachycardia coming out of the OR for the last 6 surgeries over 5 years period with the last one being Jan 2017. Each time I had surgery the tachycardia events worsened and I went into anaphylactic shock. The doctor told me it took them longer to stabilize me than it did to do the procedure which was a partial thyroidectomy. This particular dr demanded I see an allergist because he said next time I won't be so lucky. They had to shoot me with epinephrine and Benadryl and a few other things during the shock. He told me that they are sure I am allergic to a commonly used antibiotic in the OR called Ancef and will shortly be tested for all agents used pre/post surgeries. I'll keep you updated. What I don't understand is I had the same anesthesiologist for 3 surgeries straight and not one time did she suggest I see an allergist for allergy testing. One time my heat rate was over 200. Again, I'll add to this post as I get results. Another thing to note is when you have an allergy each event thereafter worsens until eventually you don't recover and die. Pretty scary and I'm highly agitated that no one has suggested I be allergy tested especially the anesthesiologist who put me under 3 times. The dr's and anesthesiologist were all aware of my past events going into surgery but I'm so glad I had a very serious talk with anesthesiologist this time before going under as he took really care in waiting 10-15 mins each time he'd administer a drug while putting me under and shortly thereafter that's how he was able to determine the likely cause of this almost fatal event. Pretty scary. Just think I almost died from a simple partial thyroidectomy that could've and should've been prevented but who do you blame here. Again, I'll update this post as I get allergy results next week.

I recently had a septoplasty, and had a tachycardia while coming out of anesthesia. I have had previous operations with no problems. I am not sure if I had a previous sinus tach or if it was caused by the anesthesia. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am scared to have more surgery!

Hi.  This happened to me just back in Dec. 06 coming out of surgery.  I have sinus tach but have never had a problem coming out of surgery before until then.  I was doing fine and all of sudden my monitors starting going off and my heart rate was at like 148 and my blood pressure was 160/97.  I freaked out.  I had not had my beta blocker med. (tenormin) yet so they sent out a nurse to the waiting room to get one of my pills from my purse.  I took it and within an hour I was back to normal.  But, this has sooo freaked me out because I have had several surgeries and that has never happened before.

I always tell the nurses when I am being admited that I am allergic to epinephrine.  I am not really allergic to it but it will make my heart go crazy.  I don't know if some doctors use that to get you going again after surgery or not so I tell me just in case.  However, I did not tell them that this particular time so I don't know if maybe it was something they gave me coming out of the anesthesia or what.  I would love to know myself because that is very scary.

If you find out something, please post it.  In the meantime, good luck to you in surgery and as for the sinus tach, even though it is scary as all get out the drs. can give you some meds to get it back in check.  Hang in there.  You will do great.  I would tell them though that you can't take epinephrine or any type of stimulate med.  My understanding is that different anesthsiologists use different meds. so what one may have used that worked fine, the next may use something totally different.

that is intersting I was given an anti nausea med in hospital and it made  my heart race too.  I was in for tachycardia and they had gotten it slowed down with drugs and the drugs they gave me made me sick,so they gave me an anti nausea med  iv and my heart took off like a rocket. Also the stuff they give for a nuclear stress test and the dye they give for cat scan made my heart race

Well, not with anesthesia, but I was in the hospital for something else and they gave me phenergan, an anti-nausea medication, which made my heart race at 120 bpm for about 12 hours.  Very frightening!  Needless to say, I always tell every medical professional I come into contact to that I cannot take phenergan.  When I was in the hospital after having a c-section I refused all anti-nausea drugs because of fear of that happening again and wound up vomiting on myself (and into my cell phone - gross!) while lying in the hospital bed.  I have heard of anesthesia-induced tachycardia - I would definitely talk to your anesthesiologist about possibilities to reduce this risk.
