aortic insufficiency

My 9 year old was just diagnosed with mild to 1+ aortic insufficiency and a pulmonary artery leak.  The cardiologist said to follow up with a repeat echo in 6  months.  I looked up aortic insufficiency on the internet and it seem to be a rare condition, occurring in 5 out of 10,000 people; mainly men between the ages of 30 to 60.  What is the prognosis of this disease?  Is the insufficiency progressive in nature or does it sometimes remain the same?  Are there any other diseases for which aortic insufficiency is a symptom?  All the cardiologist mentioned was that my son might have to have his aortic valve stitched in 20 years.  Thank you for your help.

Sorry, I am reading this post after answering  your other post on the same subject.  The aortic root of 28 mm is insignificant and a minor aortic valve leak is not uncommon.  As one ages the valve orifice and leaflets may have some calcification and stiffening that may increase regurgitation.  There are muscle and tissure disease that can cause regurgitation as well as birth defects of the valve structure.
