aortic root

My 22 year old son was recently evaluated at Mayo Clinic for a possible connective tissue disorder such as Marfan or EDS.  His workup revealed an aortic root size of 40 cm.  He has extensive musculoskeletal problems including DDD with ventral cord flattening.

Our biggest concern currently is the aortic root size.  His BP is pretty normal at <110/80; he has moderately severe asthma from birth so he has never been very sports minded.  He has wide spread pain and recently (the past several months) has developed right sided chest discomfort that is enduring.

Is it time to find a cardiothoracic surgeon or cardiologist for medical management?

Thank you

Which Mayo Clinic did your son go to?  The Minnesota location has a Marfan's specialty center.  The Mayo docs will usually order the other necessary consultations.  He definitely needs to see a cardiologist if he has any enlargement of the aortic root whatsoever!

I would mention his diagnosis when he makes the appointment.  The goal is to have a repair done before there is a high risk of rupture, so time is of the essence.

Go to www.marfan.org.  There is a lot of valuable information there.
