Beta blockers really do not affect adrenaline. Beta blockers primarily block B1 and B2 receptors. By blocking the effect of norepinephrine and epinephrine, beta blockers reduce heart rate, reduce blood pressure by dilating blood vessels and may constrict air passages by stimulating the muscles that surround the air passages to contract.
The goal is to slow down the heart and make the vessels able to accept the pulse pressure from each beat, thus reducing blood pressure.
Hope this helps,
Jon
Its a great med for blood pressure and to relax the heart and block out the adrenaline runs.....try to remember that angina is a symtom not a disease and that your doc needs to tell you why you are getting angina...is there a blockage in one of your arteries?
Atenolol is beta blocker and used to treat high blood pressure, and can also be used to prevent angina pectoris....chest pain due to lack of blood flow to an area of the heart because of occluded vessels. The mechanism for the treatment is to relax blood vessels and maintain a stable heart rate.
Many individuals and that includes myself take an ACE inhibitor (lisinopril) and beta blocker (coreg), and nitrate as needed for chest pain. If atenolol prevents angina, then it is beneficial for you. Your doctor may want to increase the dosage or change the medication if your blood pressure is problematic.
Thanks for the question and sharing your experience. Take care.
