basically the two chambers at the top of the heart are not working properly, rather than
contracting in a normal fashion, they kind of quiver. This is due to electrical signal problems and these signals also interfere with the correct pumping action of the bottom
chambers (ventricles). The Heart can go out of rhythm and will require correction by
using drugs or a defribillator. There is a risk of stroke because blood tends to collect in
the poorly functioning atriums, forming clots. You should be on blood thinning drugs such
as warfarin to counteract this. Your condition is not generally life threatening, it sounds
much worse than it is, but you could experience palpitations, chest pains, fainting and
heart failure (inability of heart to push enough oxygen around the body). Those episodes
can last minutes, weeks or even years. In SOME cases it is possible for the problem
to be cured using angioplasty procedures.
