atrial hypokinesis after ablation for A.F.

atrial hypokinesis after ablation for A.F.

After a recent ablation for atrial fibrillation, a patient is found to be in nsr, but ecg reveals poor atrial contraction. He suffers from exertional dyspnea as severe as when he was in atrial fib. Is atrial akinesis or hypokinesis common after ablation?

Depends on the amount of ablation. I don't know how poor atrial is diagnosed on an EKG, but this is sometimes seen on echocardiograms. Most ablationists who perfom atrial fibrillation ablations limit the amount of tissue ablated exactly to prevent this problem. Ask the electrophysiologist about how extensive an ablation he performed. Additionally, it may also cause a pericardial effusion which can cause shortness of breath.
Finally there is the possibility that the shortness of breath that was ascribed to the A fib was in fact due to other causes, such as low ejection fraction, diastolic dysfunction, valvular heart disease or even pulmonary disorder, anemia, etc.
