atrial septal aneurysm (1.6 cm)

by xqzzzzme, Jul 05, 2008 01:02AM
I incurred an embolic stroke 4 years ago...(age then was 44) - several acute cerebral infarctions were noted on the MRI the day of the stroke, with old infarcts noted...."age indeterminate").  The cause of the stroke(s) was never determined.  During the first two years of my recovery, I had three TEEs.  While it was determined I had no PFO, the first TEE showed mild mitral valve regurgitation.  The second TEE (6 months later) showed an increased mitral valve regurgitation.  One year following the second TEE, a third TEE was completed after being evaluated for post-stroke headaches.  The impression from the third TEE showed an atrial septal aneurysm  "avg - 1.6 cm excursion" - "no evidence of thrombus"  and no shunting.

I have two questions:  while I know there is reasonable variability between readers and technology, I am concerned that the three TEEs are a progression of a worsening aneurysm that was not identified on the first TEE, but manifested on the third.

1) Is it possible the atrial septal aneurysm was "smaller" than 1.6 cm (undetectable) in the first TEE?
2)  All the TEE reports are looking for evidence of thrombus, especially in the third TEE - would it be prudent to obtain a follow up TEE at some point to monitor the atrial septal aneurysm to confirm it is remaining "stable" and without thrombus?  (I take Aggrenox, a statin, and an ace inhibitor for secondary prevention).

My recovery is going very well, with the post-stroke headaches and heart palpitations abating.....(the headaches and palps were profound at the onset, feeling as though I was having the makings of a new stroke everyday...a frightening feeling that has since been eased as I get further into my recovery....the headaches and palps have diminished.....(but I get concerned when they flare up....which is not nearly as often as they were 4 years ago right after the stroke).

Thank you for your time.
